I chose the entrepreneurial path after asking myself a very important question: Do I want to be pushed to capacity or be pushed to my potential? Knowing the greatness of my potential; I couldn’t settle for simply being pushed to my capacity and therefore, I left the Marine Corps and struck out of my own. Today, everything I do is to keep pushing myself to reach my potential – to be the person God created me to be.
You need to be asking yourself the very same question: “Are you being pushed to your capacity or to your potential?”
As a matter of fact, parents, employers, and leaders should all be asking the same question about their children and the people under their charge: “Am I pushing people to their capacity or to their potential?”
What’s the Difference Between Capacity and Potential?
The biggest difference between being pushed to your capacity vice being pushed to your potential is the level of self-growth, learning, and risk taking involved between the two. Being pushed to your capacity happens either within your comfort zones or slightly outside your comfort zones. When you are pushed to your capacity; you have to use a lot of your energy, time and effort to accomplish what needs to be done. You also have to use most of your knowledge, skills and abilities. You quite possibly do have to stretch your limits a bit to perform at capacity but nothing like what being pushed to your potential will require.
Being pushed to your potential is all about stretching everything about you and going through continuous self-growth. Being pushed to your potential means expanding your abilities, skills and knowledge. Being pushed to you potential leverages who you are now (your capacity) as the starting point and will ask you to confront your comfort zones, face your fears, overcome your self-limitations, push passed your limited thinking and take risks.
The rewards between being pushed to capacity vice being pushed to your potential are also different.
Being pushed to your capacity is pretty rewarding at first (for most people) because you find yourself very engaged by what is required of you and you feel empowered by being able to leverage what you have to offer. Unfortunately, you are also very likely to get burned out. It is very difficult to stay motivated and maintain the tempo of being pushed to capacity. Eventually…it gets exhausting and boring.
Being pushed to your potential has all the positive rewards of being pushed to capacity but none of the downfalls. Once you start confronting your comfort zones, facing your fears, and overcoming your self-limitations you will need to shift your focus and slowdown the tempo. It’s extremely difficult (downright impossible) to maintain operating at capacity while pushing yourself to your potential because you are stepping into the unknown; you have to “operate” and approach situations differently and cautiously.
While it might sound scary to step into the unknown – it is also exciting, new, and filled with opportunities. It’s easier to stay motivated, be creative and keep from getting burned out. This has always been the best part of my entrepreneurial journey…everyday offers an opportunity for something new and exciting to happen.
Of course it’s not all fun, rosy and exciting to push yourself to your potential. It will be challenging, uncomfortable and might include some failures and setbacks. The satisfaction, personal growth, and empowerment derived from persevering and overcoming those setbacks makes it’s all worth it. Being pushed to your potential is what living is all about.
